Spreewald

To the southeast of Berlin there is a landscape that is unique in Central Europe – the Spreewald Biosphere Reserve.

Rivers run through a wetland landscape that has been shaped by humans for centuries, and yet which still remains almost untouched, providing a habitat to countless plant and animal species.

The Spree, with its numerous tributaries, forms a network of small waterways. The construction of ditches, dikes and weirs allowed the Spreewald to develop into a significant area for vegetable cultivation –Spreewald gherkins are famous all over the world.
