On the way in the Saxon Switzerland National Park

Tour itinerary

Day 1: Arrival

Arrival by own arrangement by rail or car to the hotel in Gohrisch. Paid parking in the hotel car park.
The daily hikes make use of local public transport, it is therefore recommended to buy a weekly ticket (more information available from the hotel).

The hotel also has a minibus, which can transport hikers where needed, for a fee.

Day 2: Königstein Fortress, Pfaffenstein and Barbarine

On foot or by bus to Königstein, trip with the Fortress Express up to the fortress and comfortably by lift to the fortress walls. After a tour and a visit to the museum, back down to Königstein and ascend to the Pfaffenstein with its Barbarine, they symbol of Saxon Switzerland. Descend through the Nadelöhr and back to the hotel (ca. 13 km, 5 hours).

Day 3: Hike to the Bastei, trip on the Elbe

By local train to Wehlen and the ferry across the Elbe. Ascend through Wehlener Grund to the Bastei and Neurathen Castle. After enjoying the wonderful view through the Schwedenlöcher, descend to the Amselgrund and continue along the Amselsee to Rathen. By Elbe steamship back to Königstein and from there back to the hotel (11 km, 4 hours).

Day 4: Obere Schleuse, Kirnitzsch Valley, Königsplatz

By bus or car to Hinterhermsdorf. Hike to Obere Schleuse and a romantic boat trip. Then via Hermannseck to Königsplatz, before returning to Hinterhermsdorf and then back to the hotel (ca. 12 km, 4 hours).

Day 5: Hike through the Schrammsteine

From Bad Schandau along the Elbe to Postelwitz, via the Jägersteig to the Schrammsteintor and ascent to the Schrammstein views. Continue on the Schrammstein Ridgeway to the viewing points at Carolafelsen, Wenzelswand and across the Großer Winterberg to the Kipphorn viewing point. Back down to Schmilka, return to the hotel by bus (ca. 12 km, 4½ hours).

Day 6: Affensteine, Frienstein (Idargrotte), Kuhstall

On the Kirnitzsch tramway or by car to the Beuthenfall. Hike through the Affensteine to the Frienstein and the Idargrotte. Continue via the Kleiner Winterberg to the Kuhstall, ascent to the main castle via narrow steps. After a refreshment stop, continue down to the Lichtenhain Waterfall and return to the hotel (ca. 12 km, 4½ hours).

Day 7: Hike to the Pravčická brána

By local train to Schmilka and by ferry along the Elbe to Hřensko (German: Herrnskretschen) in the Czech Republic. Hike to the Pravčická brána (German: Prebischtor) and on the Gabrielensteig to Hotel Rainwiese. Continue to Stimmersdorf and down into the valley to Kamnitz. Gentle trip by boat on the Edmundsklamm to the lower boat station. Now alongside the wild, rushing Kamnitz down-valley to Herrnskretschen and back to the hotel (ca. 19 km, 5 hours).

Day 8: Return home

Rail travellers will be brought with their luggage to the railway station in Bad Schandau or Königstein (subject to a charge).
