Südheide Nature Park

Enjoyable hiking in untouched nature in the Lüneburger Heide

Unique and unpolished, a natural, untouched landscape stretches to the south of the Lüneburger Heide, between the heathland villages of Hermannsburg, Müden (Örtze), Eschede, Unterlüß and Winsen (Aller), containing unexpected treasures.

Large forests, so deep and beautiful that they resemble primeval forests, alternate with smaller and larger gently undulating heathlands.

These are joined by wide fields and lush green meadows, filled with summer flowers. Here and there the babbling water of idyllic heath streams, which are so pure that rare animals – such as the freshwater pearl mussel – can live in them.

Discover numerous natural beauties, far away from mass tourism, on well-marked trails. From spring, with the green heather, over the months of the blossoming heather, and during the Indian summer in autumn, the heathlands offer many beautiful and interesting sights, which can all be reached on foot by the wonderfully located Hotel Im Wiesengrund.

The hiking trails are not demanding, no notable ascents.

Tour itinerary

Day 1: Arrival

Arrival possible daily from March to the end of October by own arrangement by car or rail to Hermannsburg-Weesen, free parking. When arriving by train, destination Unterlüß Railway Station, collection free of charge by pre-arrangement.

After occupying your room there is sufficient time to discover your hotel and the immediate vicinity.

Day 2: Hike to Hermannsburg

Hike along the Weesener Bach to Lutterloh and Hermannsburg. The trails lead to the lowland of the Weesener Bach, which with its clear, clean water and its bending route belongs to one of the most natural, untouched streams in the Südheide. The brief course of the stream leads through a nature conservation area with alders, willow and reed beds, as well as the remnants of marshes and swamp forests. Hiking distance ca. 16 km.

Day 3: Hike along the Heathland Panorama Trail

Hike through the realm of the Heidschnucken (a type of moorland sheep), one of the most beautiful heathland areas in the Südheide Nature Park. You will reach the nature conservation area Central Lüß Plateau Heathland via the Heathland Panorama Trail, which is a nature discovery trail that provides information about the old cultural landscape and the flora and fauna of the heathlands. The highlight of the hike is the impressive Tiefental. Hiking distance ca. 16 km.

Day 4: Hike on the traces of the great forest fire

During the forest fire catastrophe in the districts of Celle and Gifhorn in 1975, the forests around the hiking trails burned down extensively. In total, more than 7,000 ha of forest fell victim to the flames.

The hike illustrates how nature reconquered the landscape after this devastating event. Today, an extensive forest region has returned into being, and only the comparably young trees reveal a hint of the dramatic past.

Some areas were not reforested, but instead developed into heathland, thus enriching the landscape, as does the picturesque Angelbecksteich, a pond located at the foot of the wide heathland, which was initially created in order to prevent future forest fires. Hiking distance ca. 15 km.

Day 5: Hike from Oberohe along the Heidschnuckenweg

The Oberohe Heide is one of the largest contiguous areas in the Südheide – and home to diverse heath landscapes: heathland beneath high, bright birches, small juniper forests, sandpits and ponds, extensive stretches of heathland, and many forest margins.

The Heidschnuckenweg touches the Oberohe Heide to the south, first the birch forest, then the small juniper forest, and further to the south along the edge of the forest, past gnarled and blossoming heather. Hiking distance ca. 17 km.

Day 6: Hike through the Bümbachmoor

Between Hermannsburg, Müden (Örtze) and Poitzen to the north, the river-forest nature trail connects the landscape of the Örtze Valley with untouched heathland streams, a lake, and lots of forests and grassland.

Numerous information panels and hands-on experiment stations on the topic of forest and water along the way encourage you to take a closer look around. Here you will encounter diligent forest workers, measure how deeply and quickly the water flows, and learn that a LION is out and about in the forest…

As well as hikers, the trail is well-suited to families with children. There are many things to discover along the way; the trail and its surroundings provide special landscape experiences, not to mention the nearby wildlife park.

A brochure and a leaflet on the river-forest nature trail is available from the local tourism office. Hiking distance ca. 15 km.

Day 7: Return home

Return home by own arrangement.
Rail travellers will be taken to Unterlüß Railway Station.
