Pfalz - Southern Wine Route – TOP Hotel Edenkoben

Edenkoben – the Pfalz’ answer to the Garden of Eden!

Edenkoben – the Pfalz’ answer to the Garden of Eden!

In the warmest square metre of his kingdom, the Bavarian King Ludwig I built his summer residence – in Edenkoben!

The gentle winegrowing area with its wide vineyards, tranquil valleys and steep ascents up to the Kalmit, the highest elevation in the Pfälzer Wald (672 m), as well as the mild, Mediterranean climate, have been attracting hikers for many years to the southern Palatinate region, with all of its advantages.

Tours and circular routes to fortresses and castles, wide panoramic views and forest cabins offering refreshment, sociable gatherings with locals and their open and friendly manner: strangers often leave as friends.

Discover the springtime with its almond blossoms, or summer with its fresh figs and shady forests, and autumn with the grape harvest, new wine, and the horse chestnut harvest.

In the CO²-neutral climate Hotel Gutshof Ziegelhütte the guest can expect a pleasant stay in a welcoming atmosphere with excellent service!

The Pfalzcard allows you to travel for free by bus and rail, as well as free admission to more than 70 leisure facilities (e.g. Hambacher Schloss).

Day 7: Speyer with Imperial Cathedral and historical Old Town

Speyer is Germany’s oldest city and was one of the most important cities of the Holy Roman Empire. Speyer is famous for its Imperial Cathedral. Building began in 1030, and today it is the largest preserved Romanesque church in the world. Since 1981 it has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Life pulsates between the Old Gate and the Cathedral, in Maximilianstraße. Roman occupiers and medieval emperors entered the city along this “via triumphalis”. Today, inhabitants and residents enjoy the flair of this magnificent boulevard.

The historical Old Town is also worth seeing, with its cosy squares and crooked lanes between Fischmarkt and Sonnenbrücke. A special Old Town district, Hasenpfuhl, was once the shipbuilders’ and fishermen’s quarter, and now a desirable residential area.

As an alternative to visiting Speyer, it is also possible to go on a hike. The hotel’s hiking file has a whole range of suggested routes!

Day 8: Departure

Rail travellers will be brought to Edenkoben Railway Station.

If booking the 6-day version, Day 6 is departure day!
