Markgräfler Wiiwegli
Hiking in the sunniest region of Germany
Day 1: Arrival
Independent arrival by train or car to your hotel in Weil am Rhein.
Day 2: Hike from Weil am Rhein to Efringen-Kirchen
Right from the start you walk through the Markgräfler wine country with its stately vineyards, colorful orchards and small allotment gardens. You also pass the ART village of Ötlingen, where artworks by regional artists adorn houses and front gardens. Often named one of the loveliest villages in the Markgräflerland—thanks in part to its wide view over the Basel Bay. Welcome to the tri-border area! (approx. 12 km | +135 m | −212 m)
Day 3: Hike from Efringen-Kirchen to Bad Bellingen
Continue through gentle Markgräfler landscapes, sometimes among vines, sometimes along the forest edge. For long stretches you follow beautiful balcony paths with views over the Rhine plain, Alsace, and as far as the Swiss Jura. To your right rises the Black Forest peak “Blauen,” easy to spot by its distinctive tower. From Rheinweiler take the regional train (or walk an extra ~5 km) to the spa town of Bad Bellingen, where you can end the day at the renowned thermal baths. (approx. 12 km | +280 m | −180 m)
Day 4: Hike from Bad Bellingen to Müllheim
Soon after leaving Bad Bellingen you’re once again surrounded by vineyards. Informational panels along the way share facts about local grape varieties and winemaking. Passing an old wine press and the panoramic lookout “Luginsland” (“look into the land”), you reach today’s destination, Müllheim. The town is lovelier than its name suggests: the historic center has been beautifully restored and is well worth a stroll. (approx. 13 km | +220 m | −200 m)
Day 5: Hike from Müllheim to Staufen
Today’s stage is dotted with small, picturesque villages. Especially charming is the tiny hamlet of Muggardt, with colorful cottage gardens and welcoming locals. In the former mining town of Sulzburg—one of the oldest places in the Markgräflerland—the former synagogue and Jewish cemetery are well worth a visit. Continue comfortably by bus from here (or walk an additional ~7 km) to the “Faust town” of Staufen, whose castle greets you from afar. (approx. 12 km | +380 m | −280 m)
Day 6: Hike from Staufen to Freiburg
It’s hard to say goodbye to pretty Staufen and its historic old town. But the onward path rewards you after a short bus ride (or an additional ~9 km on foot) from Staufen to Kirchhofen. This stage is highly varied: meadows, forests and vineyards, and a crossing of the Batzenberg—Germany’s largest contiguous vineyard—lead into Freiburg. Black Forest metropolis, bike city, “Bächle,” friendly locals, students, cathedral and so much more… (approx. 12 km | +200 m | −220 m)
Day 7: Departure
Optional extra nights in Freiburg. Departure, or return to Weil am Rhein by bus and train.
