High Fens and Ardennes

The Fens Trilogy – Highlight in East Belgium

The Fenstrilogie is a long-distance hiking trail in East Belgium, in the Ardennes, which takes visitors on a journey of discovery through a region at the intersection of three cultures.

The Fenstrilogie is divided into three sections. These correspond to the respective local geology and follow a north-south axis. This hiking tour starts near Aachen on the Vaalserberg at the border triangle of Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands at an altitude of 322 m (D, NL) and 324 m (B) respectively.

The adventure begins in the northern Fens in an inviting landscape of meadows and hedges. In the middle section between Eupen and Malmedy, you hike through the High Fens, a wild no-man's-land with beautiful nature that has managed to keep its secrets to this day. The southern Fens, with its abundance of water, a typical Ardennes landscape with folklore and romance, concludes this largely unspoiled hiking trail after around 110 km at the lake in Bütgenbach, not far from the German border. French, German, Dutch and English are understood almost everywhere.

A 6-day hiking tour with luggage transport between hotels, an impressive and eventful hiking tour through the Ardennes!

Tour itinerary

Day 1: Arrival
Individual arrival at the first hotel in Belgium (near Aachen). If arriving by train, travel to Aachen Central Station and then take public transport or a taxi to the hotel (details in our travel documents). Free parking at the hotel for the duration of the hike.

Day 2: Vaalserberg – Eynatten
The Fenstrilogie begins on the Vaalserberg at the border triangle of Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands at an altitude of 324 m, starting very close to the Baudouin Tower, with many views down to Kelmis, through a mining landscape into the Hohnebach valley and via Lontzen and Hauset to the hotel (23 km, 6 hours, 120 m↑ 220 m↓)

Day 3: Eynatten – Eupen
On narrow paths across meadows and fields to the pottery village of Raeren, passing through some of the districts, then a long walk through coniferous forest, partly on wide paths, partly on narrow trails and over small wooden bridges to Eupen, where the stage finally ends in the upper town (19 km, 5 hours, 160 m↑ 160 m↓)

Day 4: Eupen – Botrange
Today's tour begins in the center of Eupen and climbs up to the Moorenhöhe with its sweeping views, through the lower town, over the Weser bridge into the Hill valley, which suffered devastating damage during the floods of 2021. You then reach the Fens, pass the Hill dam, and then take a detour to the Ternell Nature Center (a stop recommended, approx. +1 km). Continue through the Bongard forest, with longer passages on wooden walkways to the Marie-Anne Libert bridge, now with the Signal de Botrange in view, the highest point in Belgium (694 m) with a viewing tower and restaurant (25 km, 7 hours, 520 m↑ 100 m↓).

Day 5: Botrange – Malmedy
From Botrange, descend steadily and enter the forest in the Ghasterbach valley. Follow the stream, on partly wet paths, until it joins the Bayehon torrent. Now ascend to the Bayehon waterfall, skirting around Longfaye, passing several shelters, head south at Venn du Faineu towards Beverce, through the Trois Maret gorge, past the hermitage, then the final sprint to Malmedy (20 km, 5½ hours, 340 m↑ 670 m↓)

Day 6: Malmedy – Robertville
Right next to the mighty cathedral at the crossroads, a strenuous climb up to the La Tournante Roche chapel, the last few meters of elevation gain steeply up stairs. No sooner are you at the top than you start descending again, continuing through the forest, later across open countryside, along the mighty pipeline and steeply uphill to the village of Chödes. On partly winding paths, the Fenstrilogie leads into the Warche valley, where the Bayehon flows in. Keep right, pass Reinhardstein Castle and continue to the Robertville dam, now just 2 km along the lake to the Hotel des Bains, where the stage ends (11 km, 4 hours, 350 m↑ 180 m↓).

Day 7: Robertville – Bütgenbach
Today is the final stage of the Fenstrilogie. From the Hotel des Bains, walk along the dam, cross a bridge to the other side shortly before the end and immediately start climbing. Once at the top, descend again on wooden walkways along the Warche, followed by a short, steep climb, then continue through the Warche valley – be careful on narrow paths – shortly after a shelter before the tunnel, up and on the paved route of the former Vennbahn railway shortly after Weywertz, then, after a valley and forest passage, follow a crossroads uphill, now across meadows to Bütgenbach, where the Fenstrilogie finally ends after 110 km at the market square (12 km, 4 hours, 220 m↑ 150 m↓)

Day 8: Departure
The Fenstrilogie hike ends in Bütgenbach
Car drivers: Return by public transport to the car at the first hotel
Train passengers: Return by public transport to Aachen station, journey home
Travel times and information about the return journey can be found in our travel documents.
