Hermannsweg

The 156 km-long Hermannsweg is regarded as one of Germany’s most beautiful hiking trails.

With its mountain ridge, separated by several valleys, the route offers a diverse and varied elevation with panoramic views of the landscape of the two natural parks Terra Vita and Egge Hills – Southern Teutoburg Forest.

The name derives from Hermann the Cheruscan (Arminius), who defeated the Roman general Varus and three Roman legions in 9 A.D.

The Hermannsdenkmal, or Hermann Monument, recalls these historic events, and is only one of many important sites than line the hiking route, including the Dörenther Cliffs, the Externsteine, the Sparrenburg in Bielefeld and the Adlerwarte Berlebeck.

Starting in the Münsterland park landscape in Rheine, the Hermannsweg leads across heights of 100 - 400 m to Horn-Meinberg, ending at the 441 m-high rock group of the Lippische Velmerstot.

The diverse geological features underfoot, and interesting villages with historic centres, such as Tecklenburg and Bad Iburg, make this hike both a nature and a cultural experience.

Multi-stage hiking trail with alternating hotels and luggage transfer.
