Hünenweg

Stone Age megalithic tombs and 5.500 years of cultural history.

“Giants’ Trail” (Hüne = Giant)

The “Hüne” stands for the large stone megalithic tombs that dominate this hiking trail, and whose occurrence was once associated with giants, because of their enormous size.

One special attraction of this hiking trail is its incomparable natural diversity: the landscapes of the UNESCO geo park TERRA.vita with the Wiehen Mountains, the idyllic Nette Valley, and the gentle hills of Ankumer Höhen, followed by quiet moorlands, ancient river plains and the Hase Valley.

The cultural highlights of your hike include Osnabrück, with the Town Hall where the Peace of Westphalia was signed, Bramsche with its award-winning Tuchmacher Museum, the former Cistercian monastery Stift Börstel in Berge, the distillery town of Haselünne and the end of the tour in the old fortress city of Meppen, which is ca. 20 km from the Dutch border. Welcome to the Hünenweg, a multi-stage hike with alternating hotels, from Osnabrück to Meppen ca. 145 km.

The trail is technically undemanding and has no notable ascents.
