Welcome to the Gendarmenpfad! The Gendarmenpfad on the Danish side of the Flensburg Fjord is one of Denmark's most beautiful hiking trails, certified as the first Danish European hiking trail.

The Gendarmenpfad (Danish: Gendarmstien) stretches from the from the German-Danish border at Padborg via Kollund, Grästen, Broagerland, past Dybbol, to Sønderborg, Høruphav and Skovby on the island of Als.

Each stage winds its way along the coast of the Flensburg Fjord and offers a varying and hilly landscape, often with a view of the Baltic Sea. This hike is also a voyage of discovery into history with many myths and legends associated with the Gendarmenpfad.

Anyone following the Gendarmenpfad can easily imagine that the border gendarmes kept their kept their eyes and ears open as they followed their route along the steep embankments, through mysterious forests and along the beach, on the lookout for smugglers.

Easy hiking tour without major climbs, easy to master even for less experienced hikers. Distance hike approx. 85 km with luggage transport, Several hotel changes, all taxi transfers included in the price.

The price of the tour "Gendarmstien Denmark" includes the following:

  • 6 nights with breakfast in hotels and guesthouses
  • all rooms with shower/bath and WC
  • Tour description with refreshment stops,
  • hiking map, visitor's tax,
  • luggage transfer when changing hotels,
  • all taxi transfers during the hike included in the price,
  • as well as the return transfer to the starting point,
  • possible travel costs for public transport extra.
Tour itinerary

1st day: Arrival

Daily arrival (not on Sunday) on your own to the hotel in Padborg,
free parking at the hotel during the entire walk,
if arriving by train, travel to Padborg station,
from there short taxi ride to the hotel (approx. 2 km).

For EU citizens, an identity card is sufficient when crossing the border,
Citizens of other countries need a passport (ask at the consulate).

2nd day: Hike from Padborg to Sandager

From the hotel, first walk to the entrance to the Gendarmstien to Padborg (approx. 2 km),
at the railway subway a sign shows the direction, then follow the Gendarme's path
with the very good marking of the blue Gendarme,
the path follows the Danish-German border for the first few kilometres,
sometimes switches back and forth between the two countries,
up and down over wooden bridges in the Kollund forest, finally along the Baltic Sea
via Sønderhav to Sandager to the hotel (20 km, 290 m).

3rd day: Hike from Sandager to Brunsnaes

Today's stage often leads directly along the water,
first to Rinkenaes and Egernsund, where the drawbridge leads across the Egernsund,
then Rendbjerg, where the Gendarmstien leaves the Baltic Sea,
and leads through the countryside to Broager with its mighty church with double towers,
from Broager back to the Baltic Sea and on to Brunsnaes,
the village is reached via a road with beautiful old fishermen's and brick houses (15 km, 210 hm).

Overnight in Broager or transfer to Sandager.

4th day: Hike from Brunsnaes to Gammelmark

Along the beach again, first to the Kejserdom houses,
then a loop through the countryside and briefly back to the beach at Busholm,
the next loop around Wolffsgaard with its beautiful avenue,
now through a reed forest and with views to the other side of the fjord.
we reach a resting place at Kragesand, continue through the Liebestunnel
and a short but stony stretch of beach leads to the Frydenlund rest area,
then alternate between beach and forest and after a campsite
up the Sensigmose high shore path -with a beautiful view of Sønderborg- to the next campsite and today's stage
to the next campsite and today's stage destination (19 km, 190 m).

Pick up and transfer to the hotel in Sønderborg.

5th day: Hike from Gammelmark to Sønderborg

First along the beach to Vemmingbund.
(at high tide the marked diversions is recommended),
then in a large curve to the Dybbeler Mark
(in the German-Danish War of 1864, the Düppel redoubts were stormed here by the Prussians),
now the trail leads to Sønderborg, first on the lift bridge over Als Sound,
on the island of Als, the Gendarme's Path leads along the harbour promenade to the old castle
and to the nearby hotel (11 km, 100 m).

6th day: Hike from Sønderborg to Skovby

From the hotel, go down to the promenade and follow it towards Høruphav,
walk the promenade completely, now on beautiful paths,
partly along the high shore, partly through a lot of forest,
the footpath leads to Høruphav sailing harbour,
After a well-deserved break, the trail continues directly along the shore of the fjord,
then longer across meadows and fields, even passing a vineyard (!),
Then the destination Skovby is reached and the Gendarme Trail is completed (22 km, 180 m).

The taxi is already waiting to take the participants back to the well-known hotel in Sønderborg.

7th day: Transfer back to Padborg and Departure

In the morning, pick-up by taxi and transfer back to the
to the starting point of the walk in Padborg,
Car drivers are taken to the car,
Rail travellers to Padborg station.
